Though not a topic of the book, it is interesting to consider how recent movies treat human decency during the Holocaust. Schindler’s List quite properly lionized a hedonist who saved a thousand Jews from Hitler’s death camps. Yet another award-winning movie adaptation of a true story, The Pianist, censored out the religious motivations of the main character’s protector, German Captain Wilm Hosenfeld, instead portraying him as motivated by music—something filmmakers could understand. Similarly, Portuguese diplomat Aristides de Sousa Mendes disobeyed orders and issued more than ten thousand visas to Jews and others, perhaps saving more of Hitler’s victims than anyone else. Impoverished by his defiance, Sousa Mendes declared, “I would stand with God against man, rather than with man against God.” It is inconceivable that today’s Hollywood film this story; indeed, no one has.
