Here is another point at which Austin’s wartime experiences mark his philosophy, and one which Rowe doesn’t mention: for “Gleichschaltung” was the term used by the Nazis to refer to its radical re-orderings of German society. So Austin seems to be associating our metaphysical impulses with those underlying forms of moral and political horror that were all-too-fresh to him and his generation.
