For most of his adult life, David Stove taught philosophy in his native Australia, first at the University of New South Wales and later at the University of Sydney. He retired in 1987 and died in 1994. The following essay was written in 1987 but, until now, has never been published. Andrew Irvine

David Stove (1927–1994) taught philosophy at the University of New South Wales and the Univesity of Sydney. Widely admired as a Hume scholar and for his work in the philosophy of science, he was also an essayist of considerable charm. Stove’s most recently released book of essays, edited by Andrew Irvine of the University of British Columbia, is entitled On Englightenment (2003). His othere popular titles include Against the Idols of the Age and Scientific Irrationalism. All three books are available from Transaction.
