Dental Caries: A Disease Which Needs Attention – Correspondence

To the Editor: We read with interest the article by Mathur and Dhillon, describing the importance of early recognition and management of dental caries (DC) in children [1]. We congratulate the authors for writing an authoritative overview on the topic aimed at pediatricians working in different clinical set-ups. We would like to highlight another important aspect of DC, incidence of which has been reported to be higher in children with celiac disease (CD) [2] and discuss the relevant literature available. CD is an immune-mediated multi-organ systemic disorder caused by ingestion of gluten found in wheat, rye and barley; strict adherence to lifelong gluten free diet is the only treatment available [2].

A Turkish study with 64 children with CD (mean age 8.2 y) when compared with another 64 age-sex matched controls, reported incidence of DC was higher in those with CD at 83% vs. 62% (control group) [3]. An Italian study with 300 children (aged 4–13 y) with CD had higher indexes of DC...
