Abstract
As a phenomenon of modified value-chain structures the economic importance of business-to-business markets has been growing immensely during the past decades. This paper delivers a quantified overview of the market dimensions in terms of transactional volume. In addition, it explains the causes for this market development such as an increased service orientation in business transactions, higher degrees of customization, and influential factors on a macro level. In this context, future trends in this sector will be outlined as well.

In the input-output tables, the overall data on exports were split up into business-to-business and business-to-consumer exports. For that purpose, the sum of business-to-business production (consisting of the production for advance concessions, government consumption, capital investments, and change of stocks) was calculated. The percentage of business-to-business production as a share of the total production (consisting of the business-to-business production as defined above plus private consumption) was then calculated.

Within the European Union, all member countries have to comply with a total economic audit-system which guarantees the standard nature of the evaluation of the input-output tables. 59 different fields of production were categorized into 12 in total and exports were split up into business-to-consumer and business-to-business exports. The same year was used for the evaluation of the US-American and the Japanese economic tables. Here, however, all data had to be categorized anew because these countries' counterpart of a total economic audit-system (called System of National Accounts) uses a completely different classification system of production categories. Today, large parts of industrial hardware production are also customized. The differences here between the industrial and the service sector are no longer as vast. Many industrial value-creation processes are of a service-oriented character. The following concepts therefore equally apply to them. Cf. Kleinaltenkamp 2001, p, 297f.; Reinhart/Zäh 2003.
