Abstract

Background

Myocardial Bridge (MB) on the coronary artery is associated with ischemic heart disease and cardiomyopathy. It is detectable by angiography.

Methods

Forty-two human hearts from consecutive adult donated cadavers had been dissected and presence of any bridging myocardium over the coronary artery had been noted.

Results

90.4% of the cadaveric specimens had MB. Almost all the major branches of both the coronary arteries were involved. Left anterior descending artery was maximally affected. 36% of the specimens revealed more than one bridge. The lengths of the bridges were 2.7 ± 1.01 cm and 0.93 ± 0.4 cm in the left and right coronary artery branches respectively.

Conclusion

Present study reveals a high percentage of myocardial bridges in the general population in West Bengal involving almost all the major branches of the coronary arteries. This may be of clinical significance in regards of investigation and management of ischemic heart diseases.
