Traumatic extrathoracic pulmonary hernia

Abstract

Traumatic extra thoracic pulmonary hernia is a rare and uncommon observation. An important factor is relative lack of muscular support afforded by anterior chest wall. We report a case of 45 year old man who presented with severe breathlessness following assault with iron rod. He had with herniation of right lung, fractured clavicle, first rib and hemothorax. He underwent surgical reduction of the herniated lung with prolene mesh repair of the defect. The postoperative course was uneventful.
