Abstract
We assessed the impact of a lacrimal silicone tube inserted during dacryocystorhinostomy on the bacterial flora of the ocular fornix in 20 patients. At the time of tube removal we cultured the ipsilateral and contralateral fornices in addition to the part of the tube adjacent to the fornix. Coagulase-negative staphylococci were isolated from the fornices containing the tube in 18 out of 20 patients (90%). These findings indicate that the presence of the silicone tube does not result in colonization by new bacteria.
