Radial keratotomy and informed consent

Abstract

This article reports 2 cases of corneal rupture occurring years after radial keratotomy and the results of an informal survey to determine whether patients are informed of the eye's higher postoperative vulnerability. Both eyes lost useful vision after rupturing at the incision sites, and one was encleated. None of the ophthalmologists surveyed included in their standard informed consent a discussion of the globe's reduced resistance to trauma by blunt objects after radical keratotomy.
