Abstract
Orally disintegrating film (ODF) has received increasing attention in recent years. ODF can rapidly dissolve in saliva without mastication and water intake. The carried active ingredients can be absorbed directly by oral mucosa, which improves the bioavailability of active ingredients. ODF has been widely studied as a drug carrier. However, ODF may be applied in the field of functional foods due to it has developed as an active ingredient carrier. Currently, the combination of 3D printing technology and ODF makes the emergence of customized ODF a possibility. Consumers can customize the ODF according to their needs. In the future, the studies should focus on the preparation of ODF by 3D printing technology to meet consumers' needs for personalized nutritional supplementation. In this review, the advantages of ODF were discussed and recent advances in the formulation, preparation and characterization methods of ODF were reviewed. Its application trends and potential in the field of functional food were highlighted. The review enables researchers to quickly understand ODF and promotes its innovation in the field of functional food.
