Ouriel K, Veith FJ, Sasahara AA: Thrombolysis or peripheral arterial surgery: phase I results. TOPAS Investigators. J Vasc Surg 1996, 23:64–73. This is a report of a phase II dose-ranging trial of a recombinant form of urokinase.
Rutherford RB, Baker JD, Ernst C, et al.: Recommended standards for reports dealing with lower extremity ischemia: revised version. J Vasc Surg 1997, 26:517–538. This paper is a revised version of the original reporting standards used for patients with lower extremity ischemia. Classes I, II, and III are defined.
Blaisdell FW, Steele M, Allen RE: Management of acute lower extremity arterial ischemia due to embolism and thrombosis. Surgery 1978, 84:822–834. This paper represents the classic study, which documented a high rate of morbidity and mortality in patients with acute leg ischemia treated operatively, a finding that was unexpected.

This is a recent dose-ranging trial of 241 patients with acute arterial occlusions treated with prourokinase.
Results of a prospective randomized trial evaluating surgery versus thrombolysis for ischemia of the lower extremity. The STILE trial. Ann Surg 1994, 220:251–266. One of the three randomized trials comparing thrombolysis with surgery, illustrating that thrombolysis had a benefit compared with surgery when the process was acute.

J Vasc Surg 1994, 19:1021–1030. The first published trial comparing thrombolysis with surgery in a randomized prospective fashion. Thrombolysis was associated with improved survival owing to an increased risk of cardiopulmonary complications in the operative group.
Ouriel K, Veith FH, Sasahara AA: A comparison of recombinant urokinase with vascular surgery as initial treatment for acute arterial occlusion of the legs. N Engl J Med 1998, 338:1105–1111. The largest of the multicenter trials comparing thrombolysis with primary operation, this study randomized 544 patients with acute lower extremity ischemia to receive initial thrombolytic strategy with recombinant urokinase or to undergo immediate surgery.
