Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of tidal flat reclamations on storm surges in the West Korean Bay during the Typhoon Bavi (2020). The simulation results have shown that during the typhoon, there were some changes in wave characteristics by the tidal flat reclamation at the measuring points along the natural coastal areas where the dikes would not be constructed. The significant wave height (Swh), peak wave period (Tp) and wave power (Wp) at most of measuring points were increased after each reclamation stage, for example, with the largest increase of 36.17% in the maximum Swh value at the measuring point S7 after the reclamation stage 2. Furthermore, the wave characteristics at seaward side of dikes were significantly increased as the reclamation plans were implemented. After the stage 1, the maximum Swh values increased by 23.95%, 29.72% and 15.79% for the regions A, B and C, respectively, while 55.34% and 62.39% for the regions A and B after the stage 2, respectively. The results have also shown that the Swh and Wp during the typhoon became smaller and more closely related to the tides as the water depth at measuring points decreased. It can be concluded that the wave impacts during storm events would become more severe, especially in front of dikes, as the reclamation projects are implemented in the West Korean Bay.
