Être atteint d’une maladie potentiellement mortelle : entre réalité et représentation

Résumé

Après avoir recherché les définitions des termes « réalité » et « représentation », l’auteur analyse leur dimension dynamique ou statique. Avec Freud, il soutient que tous nos efforts, dans la vie, tendraient donc à « ravaler la mort du rang de nécessité au rang de hasard ». Ainsi, l’annonce du diagnostic de cancer viendrait se re-présenter à l’oreille de celui qui ne veut rien entendre de sa mort prochaine. L’auteur décrit les mécanismes de déni de cette réalité potentielle et les efforts d’accompagnement du soignant à qui incombe la tâche d’aider le patient à tenter d’analyser, d’organiser, de maîtriser, ce qui s’impose à lui d’une manière jusqu’alors jamais imaginée. Ce réel, dont c’est justement le propre, nous dit Lacan, de ne pouvoir être imaginé.

Abstract

After investigating the definitions of the terms “reality” and “representation”, the author analyses their dynamic and static dimensions. Like Freud, he maintains that all of our efforts in life would tend towards “pushing death to the realms of necessity rather than to the realms of chance”. Thus, the announcement of a cancer diagnosis would be represented in the ears of those who will hear nothing of their impending death. The author describes the mechanisms of denial of this potential reality and the supportive efforts of the care provider on whom the task falls of helping the patient attempt to analyse, organise and come to terms with what been imposed upon them, in a way that they never could have imagined. As Lacan tells us, this reality is exactly what cannot possibly be imagined.
