Spirituality and change in values of patients suffering from melanoma: an exploratory qualitative study

Résumé

Au coeur de débats théoriques et méthodologiques, la spiritualité est un concept psychologique qui suscite depuis quelques années un intérêt grandissant en santé. Dans le but de conduire un travail de recherche sur la spiritualité et le bien-être subjectif, nous avons mené à titre exploratoire 19 entretiens semi-directifs auprès de patients atteints d’un mélanome. Une analyse de contenu en fonction du stade de la maladie et une analyse automatique de données textuelles d’après l’âge, le genre et le stade ont été réalisées. Les résultats, non généralisables, permettent néanmoins d’envisager que la maladie est un événement qui provoquerait un déplacement des valeurs et que la spiritualité s’exprimant à cette occasion serait une dimension évolutive d’après l’âge et le stade de la maladie.

Abstract

Spirituality as a psychological concept is at the heart of theoretical and methodological discussions and has been of growing interest for health researchers for several years. 19 semi-guided interviews with patients suffering from melanoma were conducted by way of exploration, with a view to studying spirituality and subjective wellbeing. Analysis of interview content according to stage of disease, as well as an automatic analysis of literal data according to age, gender and stage has been performed. The results, which cannot be generalized, do nevertheless seem to indicate that the appearance of the illness is an event which causes a shift in values and that the spirituality felt at this particular moment is constantly evolving, according to age and stage of disease.
