L’approche transculturelle en psycho-oncologie

Résumé

La question transculturelle se pose pour la psycho-oncologie comme pour tous les secteurs de la médecine et de la psychologie. Comment penser le cancer, son annonce, son traitement, ses effets sur le patient, comment résister à la maladie, comment se sentir guérir ? Les études sur ce sujet sont encore peu nombreuses mais elles existent en France, aux USA et au Canada notamment. Elles concernent l’annonce de la maladie, la trajectoire des patients, les suivis des traitements et aussi la position des soignants dans cette situation complexe dans la mesure où ils ne partagent nécessairement pas les manières de penser et de faire du patient. Nous proposons ici une approche transculturelle de la maladie et de son traitement psychique qui intègre de manière complémentariste l’anthropologie et la psychanalyse pour mieux comprendre et mieux prendre en charge sur le plan psychologique les patients atteints de cancer.

Abstract

Transcultural questions challenge psychooncology and all other fields of medicine and psychology. Cultural representations impact on experience of disease, announcement and treatment, subjective effects, coping mechanisms healing processes and recovery. Research on this topic is scarce although studies have been conducted in several countries including France, the USA and Canada. These studies explore the announcement of the illness, patient therapeutic itinerary, therapeutic observance and professional care-providers, whose position is complex in that they do not necessarily share the patient’s way of thinking and expectations, nor their manner of dealing with the disease. To improve our understanding and psychological care for cancer patients, we suggest a transcultural approach to the illness and related psychological care that encompasses psychoanalysis and anthropology in a complementary perspective based on the work of Georges Devereux.
