Abstract
This paper describes the major factors underlying the physiology of pain. Chronic pain stems from various sensitization processes involving inflammation and nerve damage at the peripheral level and neuroplasticity at the central level. Pain results from an unpleasant emotional experience. Its various components, especially the emotional one, may increase or decrease in importance based on the different characteristics of the stimulus, the affective state of the patient, and the context in which this stimulus is acting.
