Zusammenfassung
Gestiegene Lebenserwartung und verbesserte Mundgesundheit sorgen dafür, dass Patienten im fortgeschrittenen Alter mehr Zähne haben, die zum Halt von festsitzendem oder herausnehmbarem Zahnersatz dienen und dadurch zu einer gesteigerten Lebensqualität beitragen können. Zum Erhalt dieser Zähne sind häufig auch endodontische Behandlungen notwendig. Dem physiologischen Alterungsprozess aller beteiligten Gewebe ist bei der Planung und der Wahl der entsprechenden Therapie Rechnung zu tragen. Des Weiteren müssen etwaige systemische Erkrankungen, die in zunehmendem Alter gehäuft auftreten, in die Therapieentscheidung einbezogen werden. Diese sollte individuell und im Konsens mit dem Patienten getroffen werden, denn mit kompromissloser Zahnerhaltung um jeden Preis ist nicht jedem Patienten geholfen.
