Abstract
Materials engineers make up a small portion of all practicing engineers but perform a wide variety of functions in many different industrial and government sectors. This combination of small size and wide diversity creates challenges in licensing professional engineers. In response to changing demographics in the materials engineering community, the specifications for the Principles and Practice of Engineering Examination for Metallurgical Engineering have been revised and the name of the exam, beginning in October 2008, will be Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. The new specifications are expected to be first implemented in the October 2008 administration of the exam. In this paper, the process and rationalization for these changes will be discussed, along with some more general issues related to professional registration.
