Abstract
This article sheds light on the issues raised by the current debate between advocates of psychological categorization and those of the dimensional approach in psychiatric nosology. The inflexibility of the two opposing positions can be explained in part by the clashing of the two theoretical points of view: a realism of mental disease on the one hand and a realism (or essentialism) of psychological constructs on the other.
