Revisiting History’s Cenotaphs: The “Common Man” and Ethics of Commemoration in Conflict Archaeology

Abstract

The aphorism that victors write history routinely stirs up debate about the epistemic underpinnings of conflict histories. This is as true of analyses of the most publicized of modern wars as it is of studies of little documented conflicts in the distant past. Nowhere, however, are source discrepancies as tangible as in the records of resistance movements in feudal and colonial societies. Archaeologists working in such contexts thus have a chance to adopt the ‘common man’ as a subject of research not only to balance the record, as it were, but also on ethical grounds with a view towards commemoration.

L’aphorisme selon lequel l’histoire est écrite par les vainqueurs provoque régulièrement des débats sur les fondations épistémologiques de l’histoire des conflits. Cela vaut pour les analyses des guerres modernes les plus connues comme pour les études de conflits appartenant à un passé lointain et peu documenté. Cependant, aucun écart de sources n’est plus flagrant que dans le cas des mouvements de résistance dans les sociétés féodales et coloniales. Les archéologues qui travaillent sur ce type de contexte historique particulier ont donc l’opportunité de concentrer leurs recherches sur « l’homme commun » , non seulement pour compenser le déséquilibre des sources, mais aussi pour des raisons éthiques et dans une optique de commémoration.

El aforismo de que los vencedores escriben la historia provoca el debate de manera rutinaria sobre los fundamentos epistémicos de las historias de conflicto. Esto es tan cierto en el caso de los análisis de las guerras modernas más difundidas como en el caso de los estudios de pequeños conflictos documentados en el pasado lejano. Sin embargo, en ninguna parte son tan tangibles las discrepancias de las fuentes como en los anales de los movimientos de resistencia en las sociedades feudales y coloniales. Los arqueólogos que trabajan en dichos contextos tienen así una posibilidad de adoptar al “hombre común” como sujeto de investigación no sólo para equilibrar la historia, por así decirlo, sino también por razones éticas con vistas a su conmemoración.
