Abstract
Because of the catastrophic situation in Iraq and Syria, the State Government in Baden-Württemberg brought people in need of protection, in particular young women who had been in captivity as hostages of the Islamic State (IS), to Baden-Württemberg. Approximately one third of those affected had previously started psychotherapy assisted by translators. In addition to cultural aspects and the ethnic affiliation, it is decisive for treatment that the therapist as well as the patient understand and correctly classify the disease. Clarification by the treating therapist must be adjusted to the educational level and the cultural background of those affected. Hindering cirumstances that lead to the exact cause of the mental disease not being understood (e.g. physical pain due inner psychological conflict), are possibly due to multiple and many individual and collective burdens (e.g. war in the homeland over many generations, gender-specific and societal disadvantages and imprisonment of family members or their disappearance). All these aspects must be taken into consideration within the framework of the psychotherapy.
