Abstract
Barley (Hordeum vulgare) seedlings were treated with spermidine before water stress to determine whether this polyamine influences the activity of Halliwell-Asada pathway enzymes. After the treatment, a decline in ascorbate peroxidase activity and an increase in glutathione reductase and monodehydroascorbate reductase activity were found. The latter effect was sustained throughout the period of experiments.
The results suggest that the exogenous spermidine contributed to an improvement in the functioning of antioxidant Halliwell-Asada pathway enzymes and thereby to a reduction of the oxidative stress intensity under water deficit.
