Abstract
Mild laxatives do not have a specific definition, except as the opposite of stimulant laxatives, owing to their lack of severe side effects. Osmotic laxatives (non absorbable sugar and macrogols) and soluble fibre can be considered as mild laxatives and can be used as first line therapy. Due to the lack of direct comparative studies demonstrating any clinically relevant differences in terms of efficacy, none of the products available stands out compared with the others. Explaining the therapeutic goals to the patient, i.e. one stool per day or every two days with normal form and consistency, enables a case-by-case therapeutic adaptation.
