Abstract
Faecal incontinence is a silent affliction for both patients and physicians. The main goals of the initial outpatient visit are to identify and quantify the symptoms. Self-administered questionnaires and a basic, yet complete, physical examination are particularly important. Currently, a conservative approach, emphasizing dietary changes, stool softeners, loperamide and biofeedback, characterizes primary treatment for this disorder.
