Abstract
The pioneering steps in obesity surgery were full of surprises. In April 1954, surgeons from Minneapolis did experiments on dogs, then on humans, leading to an innovative procedure called jejunoileal bypass wherein a portion of the small intestine was detached and set aside. There was rapid success in the United States, which turned out to be detrimental as the procedure got bogged down in controversies till it was completely banned at the end of the 1970s. The misrepresentation of the field of obesity surgery has lasted ever since. Nevertheless, it was during the same period of time that the fundamentals of the modern science of surgical weight loss were established.
