Abstract

The predictive factors of the success of gastric banding were analyzed in the French Caisse nationale d’assurance maladie des travailleurs salariés (CNAM-TS) study of 1,238 patients who underwent bariatric surgery in France in December 2002 and January 2003, involving the insertion of a gastric band in 87.5% of the cases. Consulting physicians carried out systematic assessments one year and two years after surgery. Age (< 40), initial BMI (< 40 kg/m2), the restart or increase in physical activity, a change in dietary habits, and the number of procedures performed by the surgical team (> 6 operations in two months) are the factors significantly linked to weight loss in 50% or more of the cases.
