Intrauterine growth restriction, low birth weight and metabolic risk factors

Abstract

Over the past 15 years, the metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors associated with low birth weight have been identified. They all appear to result from the early onset of insulin resistance. Although the mechanisms and natural history of early insulin resistance remain unclear, some evidence suggests a combination of poor foetal nutritional environment, postnatal catch-up growth and changes in adipose tissue metabolism.
