Abstract
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), a typical nervous irritation of the median nerve due to compression in the carpal tunnel, is not yet accepted as an occupational disease in Germany. Although CTS was placed on the European List of Occupational Diseases a few years ago, the German Expert Group“Occupational Diseases” at the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has only recently published scientific arguments for CTS to be accepted as an occupational disease in Germany. This paper summarizes the international scientific knowledge on occupational risk factors for CTS. In addition, the problems on assessing a correlation between physical workplace burden and the occurrence of CTS will be discussed with respect to our inadequate knowledge about dose-response relationships.
