Unidirectional Composite Improves Helmet Fragmentation Performance 35%
Dyneema, from DSM Dyneema, is a superstrong polyethylene fiber that is up to 15× stronger than quality steel and up to 40% stronger than aramid fibers, both on weight-for-weight basis. It floats on water and is extremely durable and resistant to moisture, UV light, and chemicals. Dyneema HB80 has now been introduced as a unidirectional (UD) composite that addresses the requirements for Enhanced Combat Helmet (ECH), a joint program of the U.S. Army and Marines, increasing the fragmentation performance of advanced combat helmets by at least 35%.
Under the pre-launch prototype name Dyneema X31, the product underwent extensive ballistic and secondary-property testing by several helmet manufacturers. The helmets demonstrated a minimum of 35% increase in fragmentation performance when compared to the helmets currently used by the U.S. Armed forces. Offering maximum strength combined with minimum weight, Dyneema HB80 also...
