The packet that arrived in the mail in April contained a car key and a slick paper foldout advertisement stating that I had won the car or $7000 or one of a group of prizes that included a Rolex watch, an MP-3 player, or a $100 bill. To receive the prize already designated for us, we had to visit the car dealership, try the key in the car door, and if the key didn’t work simply claim the other prize. If the key worked, we could drive off in a new car. I knew that Kate, our 10-year-old granddaughter, would be visiting us during the “try the key time” listed in the advertisement and thought that she would enjoy participating in the quest for our prize. I told Kate that if we won the car or the $7000 I’d keep the prize, but if we won anything else the prize would belong to her.
