The XXII Physical Metallurgy and Materials Science Conference: Advanced Materials and Technologies (AMT) was held in Bukowina Tatrzańska, Poland, June 9–12, 2019. The meeting provided the opportunity to highlight recent developments in materials science and metallurgy and to identify emerging areas of growth in these exciting and robust fields of research. Scientists from Europe, Japan, and the United States came together at this conference to discuss innovative ideas in various disciplines of materials science and engineering with a particular emphasis on novel materials, their processing, and their characterization. The conference focused on research issues in a wide range of materials including metals and alloys, ceramics, polymers and composites, magnetic and electronic materials, amorphous materials, biomaterials, thin films, and materials and structures for nanotechnology. The exciting event also gave young researchers the opportunity to present their own scientific achievements.

Given the depth and quality of the research presented at this conference, the Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance (JMEP) invited contributions from the conference to form this special issue. We, the guest editors, have had the privilege of reviewing the notable research presented by these authors as this issue of JMEP took shape, and we thank the contributing authors for sharing their work. We hope that you enjoy the articles and that these research efforts will positively influence your own research objectives.
