Abstract

In this paper, hydrometallurgical extraction and characterization of nickel from spent methanation catalyst composed of components NiO, Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2, and SiO2 were investigated. During the study, parameters such as acid concentration (eq/L), solid-to-liquid ratio (g/cc), temperature (K), and time (hours) at particle size < 100 μm were investigated and optimized. Further, selective leaching of Ni and Al and oxidative leaching of Fe were achieved from SiO2-TiO2 gangue. Iron was selectively precipitated and separated with alkaline reagents and Al was stabilized in the aqueous state using oxalic acid. From the process, 99 pct of NiO was recovered with 98.9 pct purity and the investigations were also supported with the detailed characterization using ED-XRF, FT-IR, and XRD studies.
