Abstract

Nitrogen removal from molten steel by slags containing TiO or Ti2O3 has been investigated at 1873 K using two new slag-metal equilibration techniques: the liquid sealing method and the static atmosphere method. The results on the nitrogen distribution obtained from the various slags, 50 pct CaO-50 pct Al2O3, 40 pct CaO-40 pct Al2O3-20 pct TiO2, 40 pct CaO-40 pct Al2O3-20 pct Ti2O3, 40 pct CaO-40 pct Al2O3-20 pct TiO, and 40 pct CaO-40 pct Al2O3-30 pct TiO, revealed that the nitrogen distribution ratios for TiO-containing slags exhibit significantly higher than the other slags, indicating that those are much more effective for the removal of nitrogen from molten steel. The nitrogen removal ability of slags was found to be as follows: TiO slag >> Ti2O3 slag > TiO2 slag >> CaO-Al2O3 slag.
