In Situ Observation of Phase Transformations in the Weld Metal of EH420 Shipbuilding Steel Subjected to Varied Heat Inputs

Abstract

Salient phase transformations in the weld metal of EH420 shipbuilding steel with various heat inputs were observed by confocal scanning laser microscope. Under lower heat inputs, bainite laths prefer to form on austenite grain boundaries. When the heat input reaches 15 kJ/mm, ferrite side plates and acicular ferrites are found to be more conveniently formed on austenite grain boundaries and inclusions, respectively. Further increasing the heat input may drive bainite to vanish completely.
