An Investigation of Short Range Residual Stress Fields in Ferrous Lath Martensite

Abstract

A novel experiment is reported where the X-ray line broadening from martensite has been measured as a function of the specimen thickness. The diffraction lines become narrower as the sample thickness decreases, which is attributed to the relaxation of local residual stresses. By comparison with results of microstructural examination, it is concluded that the length scales of the stress fields correspond with the grain size or, more specifically, with the sub-block size of the martensite structure.
