Abstract

We study plastic deformation at triple junctions in columnar-grained nickel, where there is no out-of-plane grain constraint, under tension. In addition to orientation and slip trace analysis, we map surface topography and in-plane strains. Several local accommodation modes are observed, including the activation of relatively compatible slip systems that deviate from single crystal responses, change in slip intensity, out-of-plane relative rotation between grains across grain boundaries, and changes in lattice rotation towards the triple junction.
