Abstract
Is de Qi nothing more than a sensation experienced by patients on insertion of acupuncture needles, or is it a specific type of energy that could be measured scientifically? This idea is explored in a series of measurements of bioelectrical potential difference in a patient with an amputated left tibia, who developed two painful neuromas. The study demonstrates that, when the acupuncture practitioner achieves the de Qi sensation, a change is recorded in the electrical spectrum of the areas around the neuromas. It also shows that if the needles are left inserted for a certain period of time, they lose their conductive capacity and their ability to reduce abnormal, internal electrical potential.
