Bei der Diagnose von Kopf-Hals-Karzinomen wird nach simultanen Zweittumoren gesucht, der Halslymphknotenstatus erfasst und zumeist eine Computertomographie der Kopf-Hals-Region durchgeführt. Die Behandlungsstrategie ist heute meist eine multimodale Therapie. Sofern der Primärtumor organ- bzw. funktionserhaltend operiert werden kann, stellt die Operation die Behandlungsoption der ersten Wahl dar. Eine R0-Resektion ist immer erstrebenswert. Je nach Stadium der Erkrankung schließt sich eine adjuvante Radiotherapie bzw. bei Risikokonstellationen eine simultane Radiochemotherapie an. Bei nicht organ- bzw. funktionserhaltend operablen Tumoren ist die definitive simultane Radiochemotherapie die Behandlungsmethode der Wahl
