Schmerzen werden bei über 60% der Patienten auf deutschen Palliativstationen als einer der Aufnahmegründe genannt. Das Auftreten unerträglicher Schmerzen ist eine der häufigsten Befürchtungen bei dem Gedanken an eine Tumorerkrankung. Eine zufriedenstellende Linderung der Schmerzen ist jedoch bei fast allen Tumorpatienten zu erreichen. Einfache Therapieleitsätze, die kontinuierliche Weiterentwicklung retardierter Opioide sowie schnell wirksamer Analgetika für Notsituationen ermöglichen auch Ärzten außerhalb der spezialisierten Zentren, Schmerzen bei Tumorpatienten suffizient zu behandeln.
