Lumbar disc herniation: Treatment with ozone and with others percutaneous techniques

Abstract

Percutaneous intradiscal techniques may constitute a good alternative to herniectomy in cases of impingement between the disc and the root when, after two or three months of nonsurgical therapy, pain symptomatology has not been cleared up and neurological deficit is minor or totally absent.

After reviewing the different minimally invasive techniques generally used, the Authors will examine the therapeutic properties of ozone. In the Authors’ opinion, these characteristics make it suitable in these pathologies.

This technique works, as well as other percutaneous intradiscal techniques, on the volume of the disc. However, ozone can also work efficiently on the release of inflammatory molecules, which plays an important role in pain caused by discal herniation.

The low cost of ozone therapy, reduced collateral effects and complications, and high percentage of optimal and good results (the same as for other techniques) largely justify its use in disc herniation.
