Abstract
This article describes various aspects of shame. Shame is a natural emotion that serves to guard values and norms in a social group. Existential shame, however, leads to massive self-depreciation. In particular from the perspective of Gestalt therapy, this article addresses the phenomenon of existential shame and how it comes aboutThe treatment of existential shame in psychotherapy requires expertise, and it is important that therapists have examined their own history of shame. Clients need a framework of trusting dialogue in order to perceive, name, and process their shame.
