Zusammenfassung
In diesem Beitrag wird der Frage nachgegangen, unter welchen Bedingungen die Freiwilligenarbeit Jugendlicher einen Einfluss auf die Bereitschaft zu politischer Partizipation besitzt. Theoretisch wird die Frage mit Bezug auf die Theorie gemeinnütziger Tätigkeit beantwortet. Diese besagt, dass nicht primär das soziale Engagement, sondern die beim Engagement gemachten Erfahrungen relevant sind für das Ausmaß politischer Beteiligungsbereitschaft. Diese Annahme wird durch zwei Untersuchungen (N1 = 222; N2 = 1.431) bei Jugendlichen geprüft. Die Befunde beider Studien stützen die These, dass Freiwilligenarbeit nicht direkt, sondern vermittelt über die im Zuge des Engagements entwickelte Prosozialität und die gemachten Erfahrungen das Ausmaß politischer Beteiligungsbereitschaft vorhersagt.
Summary
Voluntary work and the willingness of civic engagement during adolescence — sketch and empirical test of a theory of community service
This contribution investigates framework conditions under which young people’s participation in voluntary work influences their willingness to be politically active. The question will be answered using a theory of community work. This theory states that it is not primarily doing service, but the experience made during voluntary work, which is relevant for the willingness of civic engagement. This assumption will be tested with two studies (N=222; N=1431) of young people. The results of both studies support the hypothesis that voluntary work does not directly, but indirectly — via the development of prosocial attitudes and other experiences during the work — which predict adolescents willingness of civic participation.
