Abstract
The question why such a large proportion of the population do not participate in elections is still puzzling political scientists. The factors influencing voter turnout are numerous and have become the subject of controversial debate. In this review, relevant studies on the connections between voter turnout and the independent variables education, age, civic duty and compulsory voting are discussed and systematized. Also, publications on the possible consequences of a low turnout are examined in greater detail. This shows that there are still many discrepancies in the literature and that the systematization of further research is necessary.
Notes
