History of pudendal neuralgia: a pain without basis

Résumé

L’histoire des névralgies périnéales est rapportée dans cet éditorial. Depuis le concept primitif de compression nerveuse responsable de troubles sensitifs aigus chez le cycliste, jusqu’au traitement chirurgical de libération du nerf pudendal dans le cadre d’algies périnéales, les différentes étapes de la connaissance de cette affection sont décrites et discutées.

Abstract

This editorial discusses the history of our understanding of pudendal neuralgia. From the basic concept of pudendal nerve entrapment syndrome, which causes loss of sensation around the pudendal nerve during cycling, to the surgical neurolysis of the pudendal nerve to treat chronic perineal pain, the article describes and comments on the history of our knowledge about this disorder.
