Zusammenfassung
Hintergrund
Abstract
Background
Multiple sclerosis (MS) leads to early retirement in about one-third of patients. However, minor support measures from employers or the state can help MS patients to cope with their challenges at work. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to identify possible improvements of governmental and company support services for MS patients at the workplace in Austria.
Methods
Based on analysis of problem-centered interviews with ten health and social care professionals working with people with MS, trade recommendations for prevention and health promotion in the workplace for people with MS are provided.
Results
The experts are in favor of measures to optimize state and company services in order to achieve greater effectiveness. In the case of state support, these include simplifying access requirements, expanding financially supported therapy options, and creating a central point of contact for advice. In the case of workplace support, experts see a need for change in the provision of information and education about MS in companies, structured consideration of the scope of tasks of MS patients, and measures against fatigue at the workplace.
Conclusion
A combination of the previously available support measures with the proposed optimizations or additions by the experts can lead to a significant reduction in illness-specific absences and restrictions, which in turn results in the preservation of the ability to work.
