Guest Editorial: International Conference on Gambling 2006

This special edition includes selected papers from the 2006 International Conference on Gambling ‘Gambling and its Impacts: Policy, Practice and Research Perspectives.’ Auckland University of Technology (AUT) and the Problem Gambling Foundation (PGF) hosted the conference, with financial support from the New Zealand Ministry of Health. It took place on 13 to 15 September 2006 at the AUT North Shore campus. The event continued major themes from two previous conferences held in Auckland. As in 2004 and 2005, the 2006 conference was held in conjunction with a meeting of the International Think Tank on Presenting Gambling Populations and First Contact Services.

Gambling remains a major growth industry in many parts of the world—expanding into new markets, changing and evolving in diverse ways. The costs and benefits of this growth are multiple, complex and difficult to assess. They operate at different levels and are a touchstone for intense political, community and academic debate.
