Abstract

Initially, the article was written for the benefit of Prof. Liu’s students, but later a few close friends of his also received copies of the paper. I was one of the early ones who received such a copy. I thought the paper contains useful instructional values to the Chinese students in general and encouraged Prof. Liu to modify the paper for its publication in a Chinese journal. The current article you see here is the final product. We are grateful to the editors for their willingness to consider simultaneous usage of both English and Chinese, which is an important part of this paper. I hope the readers will enjoy reading the article just as much as I did.

Additional information

Li-Zhu WU is a professor of the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Robert S. H. LIU (刘绳熙) was born in Shanghai, China in 1938. With the exception of one year in Beijing, he received his elementary school education in Shanghai and his high school education in Hong Kong (Pui Ching High School). His undergraduate education was at Howard Payne College in Texas (B.A., 1961), and his graduate education at California Institute of Technology (Ph.D., 1965) with George Hammond being his thesis advisor. After spending four years as a research chemist at the Central Research Department of DuPont, he joined the Chemistry Department of the University of Hawaii in 1968. In 1972 he was promoted to the rank of professor. He remained there until summer in 2005 when he retired from full-time teaching and concluded his research program in spring of 2009. Among the honors he received were the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (1970–72), the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship (1974–75), the NSF Creativity Award (1987) and the NIH Merit Award (1992). He was also the recipient of both the UH Board of Regent’s Medals of Excellence in Research (1986) and in Teaching (1988). Prof. Liu is a Fellow of the Inter-American Photochemical Society.
