We are very happy to see that the Discussers have used the Glasgow Coupled Model (GCM) to perform successful quantitative simulations of the variations of both v and Sr during a drying test performed by Cunningham et al.  at zero net stress on an initially saturated sample of a reconstituted silty clay. We are also very interested to see the Discussers proposed methodology for calibrating GCM parameter values from the results of a drying test performed at zero net stress. We would, however, like to provide some comment on and response to the Discussers’ contribution.
Firstly, we would like to make a few corrections to the Discussers’ contribution.
In deriving Eq. (1), the Discussers state that this expression relates to “hydraulic yielding alone” (i.e. yielding on the DR yield surface or the WR yield surface). In fact, Eq. (1) applies whenever there is mechanical yielding (i.e. on the M yield surface), irrespective of whether this also involves simultaneous retention yielding on the...
