Abstract
Diabetes-specific complications such as acute metabolic imbalance and an increased risk of infections can occur when travelling. Complications associated with diabetes-related diseases can occur by the stress of travelling or even become newly manifest. Educating patients and their relatives on diabetes, hypoglycemic detection, diabetic complications and self-monitoring can help avoid many complications. Climate, time differences, changes in routine and leisure behaviour combined with unusual and increased levels of physical activity as well as stress situations all put the diabetes patient at risk. Insulin-dosage problems may also arise. Loss of fluids (risk of impaired renal function) as well as other changes in eating habits need to be taken into account. In addition, hygiene factors, the availability of medical treatment at holiday resorts and the management with various infections should all be considered when planning a holiday.
