Abstract

Every second person in Germany is overweight. In patients with morbid obesity, conservative therapeutic measures often fail. Bariatric surgery can induce good long-term results with respect to loss of bodyweight and reduction of concomitant comorbidity in this patient group. To detect operation-induced deficiencies in minerals, vitamins as well as drug and hormone concentrations and to objectify the medical/psychological changes in the patient, a structured follow-up is mandatory. Adaption of pharmacotherapy, especially with respect to diabetes medication, is necessary.
